Contaba el filósofo Julián Marías que a sus diez años ya fantaseaba con el universo variopinto de la India. Cumplió con ese viejo sueño a los cuarenta y cinco, cuando en el verano de 1959 recorrió Mumbai, Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, Calcuta, Delhi y Agra con ocasión de un congreso de Filosofía. India llevaba en ese momento poco más de una década de independencia, pero era ya el joven y anciano país sobre el que muy pronto planearía una enorme masa de viajeros occidentales en busca de algunas de las preguntas y respuestas que ya anticipaba Marías. De su maestro Ortega y Gasset extrae la pasión por el mirar haciendo nuevo lo consabido, que es la esencia de las imágenes que configuran una idea de India: de su prodigioso cine, a sus ubicuas vacas; de sus muchedumbres urbanas al gentío de sus carreteras; la religión, la muerte y la vida y siempre la alteridad como circunstancia y confluencia de nuevos saberes. Entre los escasos testimonios españoles de la experiencia india, el de Marías, que recuperamos tras décadas de olvido, es de obligada lectura.
